What happens if i don’t have good SAT or ACT scores? Is that going to prevent me from doing well in Computer Science (or college in general) or even getting into college?
Well the answer is a little complicated and added to because of the recent pandemic.
For many many years the SAT or ACT was what was used to determine if you were going to go to college and which college you could attend. However, in the last few years many schools have started to see that the SAT or ACT is not necessarily a guarantee for success in college. So schools across the country have been looking at alternative methods whether it’s looking at just high school transcripts, looking at work done outside of school such as volunteer work or work in sports programs and different things like that. Whether it’s a essay that you’ve written or maybe you have someone who’s written a letter recommendations for example a former teacher or teachers.
Different schools will have different requirements. Many schools do still list an SAT or ACT score and if you don’t have the appropriate score they will have alternative methods to use. Some schools have completely removed the requirements and needs for the SAT or ACT. It just depends upon what the school is that you’re going for.
Now the reasons why the SAT or ACT have not necessarily been a good indicator for college success is a bit complicated so we’re not going to go into that. The key thing for you is to figure out what school you want to go to and figure out what’s the best way to get in figure out what their requirement needs and policies are and to whether or not you be accepted. Using that methodology the other things you might want to look at.
Understand that the SAT or ACT are very much focused on the scan-tron or “bubble style” test and some people have a very hard time with that type of test. That’s okay lots of instructors know this and therefore they use multiple ways to try to test and identify knowledge and skills that you would have learned in class. So don’t think that doing poorly on the SAT or ACT is going to necessarily exclude you from going to college or doing well in college.
The key thing is to focus on what you’re doing, study hard, and work well for your grades. That way you’ll be able to be successful in college and beyond.
